Wife on a Dime

1 step DIY bleached flannel

Recently I saw bleached flannel at a local craft show being sold for $45-$55 and I loved them but not for that price. I noticed that one of the flannels was made using a cheap Walmart brand flannel and that’s when I decided to go home and try it. The final product turned out amazing and it was FREE since I already had the shirt and supplies at home.

Here’s the before pic! I got this flannel from Walmart last year on clearance for $5. Figured I’d do a test run on it before buying a flannel and ruining it.

I already had a bottle of bleach and a spray bottle. I ended up using two spray bottles. The big one has the “spray” feature which creates the splattered effect and the little bottle(not shown) is from misting which creates the faded look. The little bottle is a little spray bottle that had body splash in it at one point. You can use any bottle you have laying around. You’ll see this bottle used in one of the videos below.

I just poured the bleach straight into the spray bottles because I found that it worked faster with more bleach and less or no water mixed with it.

I did this at home in my shower but I recommend doing it outside because of course the fumes were super strong! It was raining the day I did this. Also, I’ve been told that the bleach works better and is brighter if you do this in the sun!

I started off by trying this on a black and white flannel and realized that it wasn’t doing much good since the majority of the flannel was white already. I recommend doing this on a colored flannel because the effect is more noticeable. This is when I grabbed the burgundy flannel and it worked much better for me.

Disregard the part about half water and bleach. For me, all bleach ended up working better. BUT, that could be because I was not outside in the sun.

This shirt worked much better! Tip: Spray the bottom more heavily to create an ombré effect.

Spray under the arms, the back, and under the collar.

Once I felt like the shirt was bleached enough, I rinsed it out in the bathtub and dried it. You can always add more later if needed.

It’s done!

Warning: I do not recommend washing these with any other clothing because it might bleed onto your clothes. I haven’t tried it and don’t plan to lol.

These are an easy way to dress up a t-shirt!

I’ll be making a red buffalo plaid flannel for Christmas next so make sure you subscribe to this blog on my main page! 🎄 I might even do a little something extra to the back of it. 😉
